That said, cancer rates have been decreasing over the last decade. Butte does have that toxic Superfund site and the water table in the area was long ago contaminated. The one thing that I knew about Anaconda before going through there, and the one thing that gives me pause about living there, are the disproportionate number of cancer rates in the area due to the old mining and smelting business in Anaconda, Butte, and the Silver Bow and Deer Lodge counties. Georgetown Lake is beautiful, there's skiing nearby, the town of Philipsburg is close and fun to shop at and it has the old Granite mining ghost town to check out. Didn't explore the surrounding area for newer homes or land. Homes near downtown are small, mining company- looking homes. How many years do you want to wait?ĭrove through Anaconda this summer. Crime is close to average (a bit lower on violent, a bit higher on property crime). You could call the economy weak or decent depending on your expectations. Population slightly declining but not too bad / too fast. Was a radical hotbed a hundred years ago. All male City administration / mayor / council. I was debating whether to say anything but now that the ice has been broken, I will. Anaconda / Butte are higher elevation than those other more "popular" places, but the surrounding scenery and outdoor attractions are nothing to scoff at. Many of the public buildings in town are also very interesting and well crafted.Īnaconda (and nearby Butte) have largely been overlooked by the waves of people from many other states who have bought up real estate around Bozeman, Missoula and Kalispell / Flathead Valley. During its peak years, Anaconda was a very wealthy town for the size. Many of the homes are well crafted, victorian looking, not cheap stucco or brick boxes like one sees in most cities today. That left a lot of housing available, which explains why the real estate prices seem reasonable, even to this day. There weren't many other good jobs nearby so many of the former smelter workers left to find jobs elsewhere. ![]() The tall smokestack from the (retired) refinery is still there, a local landmark.Īfter the smelter shut down many decades ago, the local economy went downhill with the loss of good paying industrial jobs. Anaconda was famous as the site of the giant copper smelter (refinery) when the mighty Anaconda Copper Company was the dominant mining business in the Butte area. I have only visited Anaconda, but a former co-worker's parents live just west of town near Georgetown Lake. ![]()
